Who Said It? on Nuclear Negotiations

Statement

Date: July 28, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today posted a compilation of statements made by Secretary of State John Kerry that echo assurances made by then-Secretary of State Warren Christopher on the failed Agreed Framework with North Korea in the 1990s.

"The similarity in the statements between the two secretaries is striking," Meehan said. "They use the exact same arguments, even the same words and refrains, to justify both agreements. And yet the Agreed Framework failed to keep North Korea from arming itself with nuclear weapons."

"Fortunately Congress has the benefit of history to caution us. I encourage us all to compare Secretary Christopher's assurances on key issues to Secretary Kerry's, and bear them in mind as we weigh the Iran deal."
